Maxed out at 95MPH on the Autobahn.

This’ll add some much needed horses under the hood. Plus it’s red for even more powah

My first car, a 1988 VW Polo supposedly maxed out at 93mph. I got a GPS verified 101 one time.

My twingo does about the same, in 4th gear since 5th is too tall to rev the engine to its limit. Long live eco gearing.

I could hit 90 on the Tercel going downhill. I bet the Celica could hit 100 on a flat if I really tried. I mean the speedo goes to 130 so it MUST be true!

I’ve got the power but I’m limited to 99
Probably a smart move honestly

Mine actually has the Nissan equivalent of that.

At least with that thing you can get laid.

Its basically the same car after all.

20 years = 4mph
Truly the golden age of affordable lack of performance.
![]() 04/09/2016 at 18:31 |

Mine does exactly 180 kmh, because JDM and speed limiter.
![]() 04/09/2016 at 18:32 |

With a long enough downhill stretch and some drafting my GDM is superior to your JDM.

I remember the glory of being the first guy to get a car with a rev counter in my group of car friends. We thought the world of our little cars with no performance. we had a Saxo, Micra, Polo, Ibiza, Mini and a Kia Picanto.
All of them, So slow.

Can I get an acronym decode here, please?

Must have made for great racing within the legal speed limit.

German Domestic Market?

it was close, you had the 38hp Mini, 55hp Polo, Ibiza and Picanto had 60 and the Micra and saxo were 75hp. We were 17/18 and I’m still surprised we all survived that era.

My car has over 300 horsepower but tops out at 113mph. :( Stupid speed limiters.

A Golf Mk2 with a 1.3 and 55hp can Hit 105mph. Downhill. Don’t ask me how I know that.

Mine has a speedometer to 100 mph but has an electronic governor at 92 mph according to Internet forums. I’ve never gone above 82, so...

That’s a lot! I maxed my 54 hp mk2 Golf 1.3i out at a GPS verified 154 km/h (96 mph). It does have a rev counter, but I don’t remember looking at it. I’m quite sure it wasn’t overly close to redline at that speed, it just lacked the hp to overcome the aerodynamic friction at that speed.

Like I mentioned above, mine didn’t. 154 kmh according to GPS. On a flat piece of Autobahn. Speedometer did indicate >160. 1991, single point fuel injected 1.3 with a 4 speed manual.
Here it is in late 2012 or early 2013, when I already had the 406 and still had the Carbagerun ‘13 Legacy.

Afaik the Mk2 even had a speedometer up to 200 km/h. My parent’s Mk2 was also a dark red‘91 with the 1.3 in CL trim and aftermarket vinyl seats. Lovely car.

I still own mine, although I haven’t seen it since summer 2013. Tucked away in a caravan storage barn. Anyway, CL with ‘Pasadena’ trim with the stock Pasadena seats swapped for sports seats with the same muster. Like these (my interior is cleaner):
I also swapped the window wiper relay to one from a newer or more luxurious VW. It changed the intermittent wipers to adjustable intermittent wipers. Such a luxurious car, and nothing ever broke. Things like the AC compressor, power windows, power locks and power steering pump never had to be changed.
I want to fix mine up some day. Maybe install a more powerful engine. Or just install the faster cam I’ve got somewhere.

Mk2 Golfs are tough. And they didn’t have rust issues like the Mk1. Our Mk2 didn’t have any luxuries except maybe the VW Alpha stereo (no cassette) and uh.. hm.. that was about it. No power nothing. I’d love to own a 16v Mk2 GTI one day.

Mine has a power starter, and that was about it :) That was the joke. It does have a some rust issues below the right taillight, but that’s because it was hit there by a Volvo around Christmas time in the mid 90s. I remember we could make the hour long trip home just fine, and it had been professionally repaired and resprayed afterwards by insurance. However, the repaired spot became somewhat rusty a decade and a half later. It’s a 1 family car, at 8 years old I was the only one who joined my grandfather (who died in 1993) to pick it up at the dealer in 1991. He traded in his 82-ish mk1 Jetta.

Still remarkable that rust is somewhat of a minor issue after that accident from ~15 years. My parents bought our Golf as their first ever car in ‘95 from the first owner who was a ranger and heavy smoker for about 13k DM. The interior allegedly had so many holes from the ashes that the first owner covered the seats and rear bench in some sort of cheapish leatherette. Rock solid awesome car with very low mileage, the only downside was a really bad repaired crash on the left side and some scratches here and there.

I wasn’t near the red line either. I was off the speedo though. It only wenter to 100mph/160kph but it looked like it should be reading 120. There was a slight decline involved in achieving that speed.

My Moped’ll do 40 if you tuck your head behind the cowl.
